The Malden School Committee is pleased to announce Dr. Timothy Sippel as the next Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, 2024, pending contract negotiations. The announcement comes after a vote of the School Committee last Thursday evening following the recommendations put forth by a Search Committee led by School Committee members Sharyn Rose-Zeiberg and Jennifer Spadafora. The Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) assisted with the selection process which was a collaborative effort involving feedback from the community and a panel made up of school principals, educators, directors, supportstaff, caregivers, and the City’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer.

“I first want to recognize the hard work of the Superintendent Search Committee,” said Mayor Christenson. “Their commitment to our students, educators and families is truly appreciated. I also want to welcome Dr. Sippel to our school community. I look forward to working with him and furthering the great work that continues here in the Malden Public Schools.”

“I am also pleased to welcome Dr. Sippel to Malden as our next district leader,” said School Committee Vice-Chair Jennifer Spadafora. “Our Superintendent Search Committee worked diligently to put forth only the best candidates based on feedback from educators, students and caregivers and I believe Dr. Sippel represents everything Malden is looking for in a Superintendent. I look forward to our School Committee working collaboratively with Dr. Sippel to move the district forward and ensure our students continue to receive a top-notch education here in Malden.”

Dr. Sippel is a lifelong educator with over three decades of experience in urban public-school districts. He currently serves as Executive Director of Schools in Worcester Public Schools, responsible for overseeing 13 elementary and secondary schools in a district that educates over 24,000 students. Dr. Sippel provides key leadership in the streamlining of central office support and the development of district policies to improve teaching and learning. He has also led the expansion of the Commonwealth’s largest Early College program in partnership with
Quinsigamond Community College and Worcester State University.

From his early days as a student in Cincinnati, Ohio, attending racially diverse public schools, and throughout his career, Dr. Sippel has developed an unwavering commitment to improving educational opportunities for all students. He entered the field of education through Teach for
America as a bilingual Spanish elementary teacher and taught for 10 years in South Los Angeles.

He later held key administrative positions such as English learner coordinator, school improvement facilitator, director of college and career pathways, and high school principal, in which he honed his expertise as an educational innovator. During his tenure in the Pasadena
Unified School District, he led the reconstitution and turnaround of the district’s highest-needs high school, substantially boosting graduation rates. He also established cutting-edge career technical education programs and launched the first Early College partnership in Pasadena.

Dr. Sippel holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service and a Certificate in Latin American Studies from Georgetown University. He earned a Master of Education from the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed his Doctorate of Education Leadership at the Harvard
Graduate School of Education in 2020. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Sippel enjoys running, reading, volunteering at his church, and learning Portuguese. He resides in Cambridge with his wife, an ESL teacher, and their two sons, one in high school and the other in college.

“I am very excited to meet and work with everyone in the Malden Public Schools,” Dr. Sippel said. “There are so many strengths within this district, and I look forward to collaborating with the Mayor, the School Committee, the district’s employees, parents and caregivers, and the broader community to ensure that every student receives what they need to thrive and be prepared for the future.”
